5th Chakra Vishuddha, Throat Chakra

Updated: Aug 14, 2023

The Throat chakra is the fifth chakra. Located at the center of the neck at the level of the throat, it is the passage of the energy between the lower parts of the body and the head. The function of the Throat chakra is driven by the principle of expression and communication. This chakra is related to the element of sound. Through the throat, sound is propagated into the air and its vibration can be felt not just in our ears, but also in our whole body. It is an important instrument of communication and expression.

Authentic expression is not something that comes easily. There’s a delicate dance between saying what you mean and staying tactful or diplomatic. Often it’s easier to say what the other person may want to hear instead of speaking your truth. Fear of not being accepted, or judgment from the other may hinder your truthful verbal expression.

Work on the lower chakras will help prepare you for this level of communication. For example, when you align the first and second chakras, it helps with overcoming fear. Opening the third chakra helps you to feel your personal power and have the confidence to express yourself. Knowing what’s in your heart comes when you align the fourth chakra. Then, when it comes to verbalizing your needs, desires, and opinions you’re better able to determine how to be truthful to yourself and others.

Where is the Throat Chakra

This chakra is located in the region of neck and shoulders and its color is blue.

The gift of this chakra is accepting your originality, expressing your authentic voice and speaking your truth.

The energy of this chakra allows you to seek knowledge that is true, beyond limitations of time and space, beyond cultural and family conditioning.

The main challenge for the fifth chakra is doubt and negative thinking. When you gain and verify your knowledge through meditation and direct experience, then doubt and negativity are removed.

The "way of the Throat Chakra" is the way of inspired creativity, seeking and sharing of the truth.

Key characteristics of the Throat Chakra

Often called the Vishuddha, this chakra rests in the middle of your neck, right at the throat. It is intimately connected to all your self-expression, so it affects (and is affected by) everything to do with communication.

The throat chakra can impact on all of the following:

Your emotional honesty

Whether you live an authentic life

How well you handle conflict or confrontation

The quality of your relationships

Your ability to be heard

Awareness of your needs

What is Throat Chakra Healing?

This chakra is in charge of your communication. It’s important to note that good communication is not just about talking, but also about listening.

When it becomes imbalanced, it can exhibit the symptoms in many different ways.

Some signs of imbalance include timidity, fear, manipulation, dishonesty, and arrogance.

But when everything is going as it should with this chakra, you can express yourself well in both spoken and unspoken ways.

When you can freely express your artistry, creativity, and imagination, and you also feel content with how your life is going, you have harmony and balance in your chakra.

It is one of your emotional centers. Just think about how you always get that lump in your throat whenever you’re overcome by sadness!

The location of this chakra is where some of your emotions are stored. Your ears and shoulders are also related to this chakra, which explains why you experience physical discomforts when this chakra is out of balance.

Emotional and psychological issues can also be present as much as physical symptoms.

When you’re sick in this chakra, it affects the entire chakra system, and you need to address the problem as soon as possible before the problems worsen.

Throat Chakra Meditation

Ideally, you should do your throat healing meditation once a day for at least 10 minutes, but you may see improvements even if you only practice a few times a week.

Here’s what to do:

Sit down in a comfortable chair in a quiet room.Inhale and exhale 10 times, as deeply as you can. Breathe in through your nose, and then exhale through your mouth.Starting at the top of your head, scan down the body and imagine your muscles relaxing as you go.When you’ve done this for your whole body, picture a spinning ball in a shade of blue (the throat chakra color). See it sitting at the level of your throat, and imagine it glowing.See the blue sphere getting bigger and bigger, focusing on a feeling of openness and relaxation in the throat.Allow the energy to disperse through your body, and then open your eyes when you’re ready.

Sounds for the Throat Chakra

Crickets and other singing insects are the natural sound associated with the Vishudda. Also, the human vowel sound “Eye” and the mantra tone “Ham”, and the musical keynote G. The sound frequencies 141.27 Hz, 384 Hz, and the Solfeggio tone 741 Hz are also beneficial to the Vishuddha. A crystalline Solfeggio tone of 741 Hz is perhaps the most efficient way to quickly open and cleanse the Throat Chakra. The Solfeggio tone of 741 Hz is believed to awaken the intuition.
